The United Kingdom, which has developed a reputation in some circles as counterinsurgency experts, has never had a particularly big fight since World War II, although they have fought multiple insurgencies at the same time. In the case of Malaya (1948–60), the losses never got above 0.09 British killed per 100,000 during its 13 years. Northern Ireland (1968-1998) never got above 0.19 British soldiers killed per 100,000 during its 31 years and for 20 of those years was below 0.025 per 100,000. The British also lost several insurgencies during this time, including their withdrawal from Palestine in 1948 and Aden in 1967. The relatively bloodiest year fighting insurgencies by the U.K. since World War II was 1948 in Palestine, where the loss rate peaked at 0.28.30 That was the year they withdrew, and they were not there for half the year. One can argue whether they should really be considered victorious in Cyprus, where the head of the insurgency became the defense minister for the new independent Cypriot government, or Kenya, where seven years after the insurgency ended, the head of the independence movement there took over as prime minister of the newly-independent country and a year later became president. Even Malaya is not that clear cut, as the British gave them independence during the time they were defeating the communist insurgency.
